Agenda books----Students need an agenda book to write down all assignments. Many do not have one and it allows him or her to "get away" with saying I have no homework. The book will allow you to see what the assignments are.

Agenda books are $3 in school store and it is an investment in your child's education.

Homework: Author’ s Study
April 22-26, 2013

We are beginning a unit on Author’s Study.
This week, your homework is to select an author and complete an author’s study.

In class, our author will be Langston Hughes.
WE will be studying Langston Hughes all week. You will conduct research; compare work s of Langston Hughes, and present information to the class Friday.
How does the author’s life affect his or her work?
Homework:
  1. 1. Select an author
  2. 2. Research the author
When was he or she born? Where is he or she from? When did he or she begin writing? What were his or her inspirations? What was his or her first work? What is his her family life like? Is he or her married? Where does he or she live? Etc
Pretend that we know nothing; your job is to tell us everything about this author.

  1. 3. Compare pieces of work (read his work) poems, stories, or books
Select three pieces to compare and contrast. Use the elements of a narrative or poem to analyze his or her work. We will be doing this in class this week.

  1. 4. Display information on a poster, timeline, or a PowerPoint to be shared with the class. Be original. Amaze me with your imagination. Tell us about your author.
  2. 5. A written paper is submitted also. 2 parts of paper. Writing Criteria is also incorporated in the paper.

Reading Groups: Your child is in a reading group according to data from assessments -FAST and SRI scores

Your child will need reading journals, colored markers, pencils, pens, highlighters, scissors, erasers, jump drive (flash drive), & paper.

Your child will be completing projects at school (3rd quarter) and will be using the internet to do research.

We are now working in Reading groups:
Eagles---Advanced Students
Ravens--Proficient Students
Blue Birds---Basic Students

Your child will have projects and more aggressive work. He or she will need a flash drive to store information for Power points, research , etc. Please send your child to school with school supplies everyday.

Informational Text
Students are reading to get information and then are able to use that information in his or her daily lives.

Upcoming events and Assignments: Assignments and due dates are underlined.

January 2013

Students will turn in final draft of narrative. Due : Jan. 15th typed up and ready to present .

Students were to write a short story with a lesson or a message. We read Seeds of Honesty.

The theme was "Honesty is the best policy".

Students will share their message or theme with the class as a Presentation grade.

January ; Research paper & artifact on famous African American due January 31th

February is African American month.

We will be reading to be informed.

Students will be working on informational text.

2 Projects
1. African American Research Papers- Students will complete a research paper on a specific famous African American in history. Then students will have to present the person to the class.
Students must use a Powerpoint or a poster within their presentation. Remember the purpose is to give us information about a famous African American person in history.

There are 2 pieces 1. Research paper 2. Artifacts
ex a bus for Rosa Parks
a statue of Martin L. King
A speech on a poster for Malcolm X
etc.

Persuasive Argument Papers and Presentations---Due February 18th

Imagine that you are trying to change someone's mind about guns. Are guns dangerous? or are people dangerous?


2. Students will present a persuasive argument
Students will gather information and articles about gun control and how the country is "up and arms" about the violence in schools.
Cite evidence.
Cite news on teacher input.
Interview ---teachers and parents

Topic: Gun control

There was a massacre in Connecticut. Do you think it is appropriate for teachers to come to school with a weapon to protect his or her students? In Utah, teachers learned how to operate a gun.

Do you think there should be laws against assault weapons? If so, explain.
Students should chose a side of the argument and will create a powerpoint to present and to persuade the class towards your postition.
Part 2: Orally presentation.--- Students will present their presentations to the class.
Powerpoint , pie chart, graph, poster, any other information that may help persuade others to see your point of view.

February is African American History Month. Your child will be required to complete a research paper on a famous or an important African American.

March we have 2 Women's Projects that are due March 15, 2013 change of due date

Projects will be displayed during the month of March

1. Research Paper-Select an influential woman from history and type a one page report on her. Please include a picture with your one page report.

2. Art project--- Create a depiction of the character or the person that you are writing your research paper on. ex. You can have Rosa Parks on a bus, a stage in a shoe box for Oprah, a stage for Whitney Houston, etc.

March is Womens' Month

March 2013-We will have a research paper due.

During the month of March, youwebsiter child will complete a research paper on a famous Woman in History and he /she will have a project based task for Womens' Month.
